Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania

IN THIS BEAUTIFUL AND PEACEFUL SETTING, the Amish live among the "English" (meaning non-Amish), or is it that we live among them? This is a place to throttle back a bit on your life and smell the daisys, so to speak.

The photo could very well be an Amish farm, or maybe not. I think I see an automobile in the picture, but that could be a visitor.

LOCATION

BIRD-IN-HAND IS LOCATED just east of Lancaster on a road called the "Old Philadelphia Pike." Many Amish or Amish-related businesses will be found along this road.

In the photo, a young Amish mom help her child carry some goods on the childs scooter-bike. I don't really know what they call it, but the Amish bikes around here have no pedals, just a "platform" to place one foot while you push off with the other. (BTW, Amish bikes in Ohio do have pedals.)

THE BUGGY

IF ANY ONE THING IS SYMBOLIC of the Amish culture, it is the black buggy. Some, like this one, have some grey color too. While most are four-wheelers such as this, we did see a young couple out courting in a very snazzy two-wheel buggy with extra-big wheels. I suppose that would be the sports car version of the standard buggy.
