Want to go for a drive in the country? This is what the roads and the scenery are like near the villages of Elba and Cotesfield, located on highway 11 north of Wood River, Nebraska, or northwest of Grand Island.. Hilly, scenic, keep your eyes open for wildlife. Some roads are well gravelled, some are not. I suggest you do not go if it has been raining, you might get stuck somewhere. I also recommend the purchase of a DeLorme Atlas for whatever state you are visiting. It will show you every road in the state and where it does or does not go. The DeLorme Atlases have saved me many miles and much aggravation.

PRIDE OF PLACE

You will find signs similar to this one at the entrance to many small towns in Nebraska and, probably, around the country. The signs are a way of showing pride in the student-athletes who achieve success, as well as pride in the town itself.

Another sign I saw proclaims Elba as the "Kolache Capital of Nebraska". I'm not exactly sure what Kolaches are, except that they are a delicious pastry brought to this part of the world by immigrants from (I think) eastern Europe. Anyway, try one if you can.

DOWNTOWN

Here is part of the business section of town. Some appear closed, others seem to be open for business. Its tough keeping a store going when your population base is 221 people.
