The Maryville Spoofhounds

While browsing in a Maryville store, we saw t-shirts for the "Maryville Spoofhounds". Later we researched the name and made these discoveries. The spoofhound is a child's toy invented in the 1920's. by pressing a button under the dog, you can make it wag its tail, move its head, lay down, etc. During a 1940's era football practice, the coach of the Maryville High School team was so disgusted with his players, he said "You guys look like a bunch of Spoofhounds!". The players were amused and began calling each other spoofhounds, and it developed into their mascot.
Amazingly, I realized that I actually had a spoofhound toy myself, which I played with as a young child back in the late 1940's or so. It still works, although the doggie lost his ears years ago. Apparently it was made by a company called "Trix". So here is my spoofhound.

Maryville: Home of Northwest Missouri State Univ.
