  • The "Liechtensteinische Staatliche Kunstsammlung" was founded in 1968 and was housed in the rooms of a former casino at the center of Vaduz. Catalyst for the founding was a private donation to the state of 10 paintings which at the same time created the basis for the collection.

In the following years the creation of a public art collection was carefully started, its focal points lying in the areas of graphic arts and sculpture. After a first project for an art museum building in Vaduz failed in the 1980s, private sponsors from the Principality undertook a new attempt together with the government and the municipality of Vaduz in 1996. This attempt stood under a lucky star. In a very short time the framework for an international architectural competition was established. The competition was decided in 1998, and was won by the architectural cooperative Morger, Degelo and Kerez (Basel/Zürich).

The museum opened on 12 November 2002. The Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein is a foundation under public law, fully financed by the Government of the Principality.

  • It has become a tradition to present a small selection of exquisite pieces belonging to the Princely Collections in Vaduz in the context of thematic rotating exhibitions. Over the course of 400 years of collecting, the Princes of Liechtenstein have demonstrated a marked interest in such works, which have also met their social and cultural need for representation. Thus, a rich inventory of works of art has been compiled over the centuries, not only including painters and sculptors like Rembrandt, Rubens, Jodaens, Batoni, Duquesnoy, Susini, Rauchmiller and Soldani, but also telling the most beautiful stories of Greek and Roman antiquity.

It's appropriate that a postage-stamp-size country like Liechtenstein should have such a good postage stamp museum -- but I'm sure the people in Vaduz are sick of hearing lame jokes about that, LOL.

I use to visit Vaduz quite frequently while I lived in Germany; it was a great place to shop for rare and out-of-print books. I remember the Schloss Vaduz quite vividly; it was an excellent area for hiking.
