We spent 5 weeks on Svalbard, mainly hiking the remote and lonesome places around the Isfjord, north of Longyearbyen.
Back then the local government did not promote tourism; therefore they had no Hotels in 1980 (But I have to say in any other way the local governor (syssalmannen) was very supportive, Thanks) The only possibility to stay there was camping, what we did.
Today it's different. Several Hotels in different price ranges are available. The official website is very informative, and kept actual, check it:
