Lyon is not only the food capital of France, a feat in itself, but offers the travveller such as myself the opportunity to employ English cultures to my advantage. Any trip on a shoestring is a constant battle of counting the pennies, but Lyon gave a little surprise that I'm in danger of overemphasising. The city is very picturesque, the two rivers converging to make a fashionable peninsular in the centre of the town, but it is when you attack the cafes, bistros and bars of Lyon that the fun really starts. I suggest Bar d'universitie on the left bank of the Rhone. Sitting outside one has a glorious view over the river towards Fouviere and the prices are lower than the above average Lyon norm. Despite the name the establishment is not full of alcopop swigging students, but the crowd is young. What I liked best was that me and a friend sat on the pavement for three hours drinking half litres at the traditional English pace, talking of the delights of France- cheese, art and pouting girls. When we came to leave the barman was so taken by our drinking habits and our polite ignorance of the French language that he gave us free drinks!

This would NEVER happen at home.
