Sri Lanka - The multifaceted island

by schmechi - last update: Jan 7, 2008

My Motivation

Buddha statue in Dambulla
My brother participated in a traineeship program in Colombo, so he worked for half a year in Sri Lanka.
So it suggested itself to visit him, the island and the various sights.

When I booked my flight I was unsure about the things, I'd experience, especially because Sri Lanka endured a civil war and it was the first country of the so-called "third world" I ever visited.

My visit

After I put my feet on the island, I have not regretted my decision of getting there: Sri Lanka offers a great variety of things to do, and there will be something for every flavour... So never mind, wether you are intrested in cultural, historical or religious things, wether you like to enjoy the nature, make adventures in the jungle, learn about herbs and tea or just want to sunbath, Sri Lanka will have the right place for all of your tastes...

Due the fact, that my brother worked with locals, I was also able to get an insight-view in the life of the island inhabitants, who warmly welcomed me and bestowed myself some of the worst hangovers I ever had (Don't drink Arrack from bottles with locals!)....

My program:

Week 1: Colombo, Mt. Lavinia, Unawatuma (bathing), Pinnawella (Elephant orphanage)

Week 2: Round trip with a rented van and local driver:

Day 1: Anuradhapura, Mihintale,

Day 2: Sigiriya, Dambulla, Aluvihara

Day 3: Kandy

Day 4: Ramboda Falls, Central highlands, Nuwara Eliya

Day 5: central highlands, Hakgala

Day 6: Horton Plains, Ella, Rawana Ella Falls, Bandarawela

Day 7: Deniyaya

Day 8: Sinharaja Rainforest

Last couple of day: Unawatuma, Galle, Mt. Lavinia, Colombo

PS: Please note, that I visited Sri Lanka before the devastating tsunami of 2004. Especially the region of Galle and Unawatuna was hit, so some of my tips may be obsolete
