Camping like kids in boot camp...

the mountain
climbing the pico summit is so easy but scaling the rock peak is sooo terrifying, it scared the *** out of me. the rock is vertical the only way to reach the top is to cling to a rope and stick my bare feet to the rock. take note this rope is precariously tied onto a small plant growing beside a rock overlooking a deep ravine below. how's that? my fear was magnified by the possibility that the plant may be uprooted any time while i struggle to pull and cling to the rope. i took off my slippers. i wasn't so confident about my slippers. i thought, with slippers on, i might miss my step and slide off, while with my bare feet, i can feel in my bone every detail of the rock and my feet's reflex works better without the slippers. no harness. i was so scared for my life i swore after the ascent to never do it again. ever. imagine this mountain soars to a height of over 600 meters. one careless single step can bring me 6 feet below the ground like a mangled skunk after a roadkill. once we got to the top, i was giddy holding tightly to the rocks. i feared i might stumble and fall off to a depth immeasurable or a gusty wind might blow me to the endless edge. the space on top of the rock is too narrow to accommodate a pack of ten. crowding is a no-no or the rock will crumble into pieces (chuckles). once in a while i would stand up to wave to the cameras of our buddies who opted to stay in the summit (for posterity sake you know) and the rest of the time im sitting on the rock. with that limited space up there, i refrained from skipping from one rock to the other. the idea of me being on a very high area drove me nuts. the nerves and the butterflies will disappear only if there were planted handrails up there. but none. we were left to rely on our strong knees, seamless balance and shrewd focus. without those weapons in my bag i will follow the fate of one unlucky git who fell off and it took a week for his search and rescue. had that happened to me, how am i supposed to send this *** out?
