Sigulda is a small town (approx 10 000 inhabitants) situated around 50 km north-east of Riga, and surrounded by Gauja National Park. The hilly, forested region is nick-named the "Switzerland of Latvia" - and the area is great for outdoors activities like hiking, canoeing and cycling. In winter, Sigulda is Latvia's top ski resort - there are several small downhill slopes around town, as well as a bobsled track. (The downhill slopes puzzle me a little bit, though - haven't tried them, but they can't be too great since Latvia's highest point only reaches 311,6 metres above sea level - and that's not even in Sigulda...:o)) |
