Arriving In Dominica From my first sight of Dominica in the air, to the day I left I had a huge grin on my face. Flying from Antigua in a small plane was brilliant. The landing at Melville hall was like no other! Soaring a few feet off banana trees, dodging between hills and landing on a short runway was jaw dropping stuff. The airport was a bit worrying, so small! As soon as we left the airport it hit me how beautiful the place was. As you round a corner and see a valley of lush fruit trees you'll know you've come to the right place. We continued on the road to Canefield, round corners, avoiding pot holes, beeping the horn to friends of the minibus driver. School children had been let out for the day and they were sitting in the back of pick up trucks waving, looking very cute in their uniforms. We arrived at Canefield and due to some miscommunication (will explain later) didn't go to our specified hotel. Instead, we went South to Roseau, asked around some different hotels and didn't find anywhere, so we went further South and found the Evergreen hotel which worked out very well for us for a couple of days (until our hotel was sorted). |
Being in Dominica As I said above, there was a little problem with our accomodation...It wasn't down the the hotel or ourselves. We were supposed to be picked up by a gentleman who was developing houses in Dominica but he didn't show. We met up with him later and luckily, didn't buy a house. Turned out he was a conman who'd been to a few other caribbean islands before Dominica. Be careful parting with large amounts of cash! The first couple of nights in Dominica, we spent in the Evergreen hotel, just south of Roseau. http://www.avirtualdominica.com/evergreen.htm (a good site for other info too, take off the evergreen bit on the end.) Popular for diving apparently. We later stayed at the WesleyAnn (?) Inn. This was arranged for us but it was very nice. Our host (who'd spent a large time in London) made us a cooked breakfast with fresh fruit juice every morning. Fried plantains was my favourite. Think big bananas, fried =P. We hired a Suzuki Vitara 4x4 which proved fun and very handy. If you like taking hire cars up tracks that look like dry river beds, this is the place! We explored Roseau at various points in the week and found that there wasn't too much but, there was enough. After cruising about at a leisurely pace and waving at locals, it was a relaxing time.

Leaving Dominica This was where the grin left my face.... Coming home after a stay in Dominica makes you want to cry. |
