Taipei, Taiwan- June 2000 Since I had already been to Taipei the previous year I did not do much of the tourist stuff. This time I came with two friends and we stayed at my friend Jon Wang's house like I did the first time. We stayed for about three weeks and did volunteer work at Kang Ning General hospital. We delivered files and helped in the ER. We also went and helped out in some mountain village. In the ER a stabbed gang member threatened doctors and dripped blood on my friend's shoe. Pretty wild. The food was gross again and we went to the night market almost every night. We became friends with some breakdancers and went to their house one night. As it turned out, one of them was a dancer for a Taiwanese pop star. My one friend had grandparents in Taipei so we visited them and went to the smelly port city with my friend's dad. We went bowling, saw a movie at WB, played basketball, knocked each other out, and drank wayyyyy too much everynight just because we could. By the end, our friend Jon wasn't happy we were there probably because he got spit on by some kid on the public buses we took everyday. |

| | My first time in Taiwan-1999 When my friend Jon Wang asked me to come home with him to Taipei during a school break, I did not even have to think about it. It was the longest plane ride I had ever been on but when we arrived it was worth it. Jon's house was a mansion in the center of Taipei. It was like a walled compound and even had a basketball hoop. Everynight I ate a home cooked Taiwanese meal (which made me miss American Chinese food). Each day, Jon and I hung out with Jon's friends. We played basketball, went bowling, and ate alot. I even accompanied the Wangs to a memorial service for Jon’s recently deceased grandmother. It was in the hills outside of Taipei. What an amazing experience. Jon's father also took us to Danshui, Taipei's port, where I tried a black egg that tasted like it should have been on Fear Factor. |
