Tambopata Research Center: Accomodation in the Amazon - A Step Up

A bit further up the Tambopata River from Posadas Amazonas is the Tambopata Research Center. Here, biologists study the breeding habits of the various species of macaws in the area. Strategically located near the largest macaw clay lick in the region, the center is an absolute must visit for any enthusiast. You will see, at reasonably close range, hundreds of macaws, parrots, and parakeets every day at the clay lick - take a camera with good zoom and a pair of binoculars - you won't be disappointed

Unique Qualities: This lodge is off the beaten track compared with the majority of tourist lodges. While Posadas Amazonas (see a previous tip) is fairly bustling with eco-tourists (approximately 50 at any one time) I spent three days with only two other tourists (and research scientists) at the TRC, so really gave the feeling of being really out in the jungle (not running into groups of other people)

Posadas Amazonas: Accomodation in the Amazon

Posadas Amazonas is one of many ecological tour lodges along the Tambopata River. Facilities are excellent, with washrooms adjoining each room (the showers are completely enclosed, so no worries about creepy crawlies joining you in the shower).

There's a variety of activities at the lodge, from climbing to the top of an observation tower (125 feet) where you can look over the top of the canopy and watch the macaws (and other wildlife) from above, to daytrips to nearby lakes to try to catch a glimpse of the Giant River Otter.

Unique Qualities: Each room at Posadas Amazonas has only three walls - the wall facing the jungle is open - letting you immerse yourself in the complete Amazonian experience.
