flag of Comoros
The Comoros are composed by four islands: Grand Comoro (Njazidja), Anjouan (Nzwani), Moheli (Mwali), and Mayotte (Mahore).
Look at the flag; every star represents an island.
Mayotte is in the hands of the French, and Anjou has its own flag and a political situation close to secession.
Although in Comoros everybody understands French (it was a French colony until 1974), and even English and Arabic, among themselves they speak a particular Swahili. Practically all the population is muslim.
The airport is at about 20 kilometres from Moroni, the country capital, in Grand Comoro Island.
Most of the population is of Malaysian origin; they are small and thin, like the malgaches in Madagascar, but there are also blacks from continental Africa.
The four islands are mountainous with volcanoes, but the peaks are not as high as the Piton des Neiges in Reunion.
I saw lemurs in Comoros. I thought that these animals lived only in Madagascar, but I was wrong.
The narrow streets in Moroni and the oriental atmosphere with mosques and people dressed with long sleeves “chilabas” and muslim bonnets reminded me the historical quarters of the Swahili Islands, such as Zanzibar, Lamu, or Mozambique Island. People are friendly and the islands are rarely visited by the individual tourists.
There is a cheap air pass to get there by the company Air Austral with the following destinations: Reunion - Mauritius - Mayotte - Seychelles - Antananarivo - Moroni - Harare. But you have to buy it in Paris (as I did).
