the most unknown country in the Pacific

by jorgejuansanchez - last update: May 21, 2005

I landed in Funafuti Island, where is located the capital of the country: Fongafale.
I spent four days in that island (I would better say atoll), and apart from Peace Corps from USA and a German, I did not meet any other foreigners.
Tuvalu is probably the less visited country in Oceania.
I flew from Fiji, and the same plane continued to Marshalls Islands, via Kiribati.
To be the only traveller in the island was an advantage. The Tuvalu people are very open to foreigners and it was very easy for me to make local friends. I was even invited to dinner in a party.
Many people walked barefoot, they had flowers in their heads and many tatoos in their bodies. They were dressed with lava lava and were always smiling.
There is a hotel for the few tourists who visit the island, the United Nations, near the airport. But if you walk until the end of the atoll, then you can stay with the german ex-priest (he is not a priest anymore), who rents rooms very cheap.
