New country

by jorgejuansanchez - last update: Sep 20, 2007

Welcome to the Republic of Abkhazia
I am now writing from Sukhum. Lovely country Abkhazia. I saw many cows and United Nations cars along the road.
The border in Psou was OK, the russians let me go in. The Abkhazian authorities were very kind.
I have 24 hours to request my visa in the Ministery of Internal Afairs. Tomorrow will go.
I plan to visit New Athos monastery and its caves. Also a lake wonderful and Gagra. One week will be enough.

The wheather is good, plus 18 degrees, sunshine and people swiming, while this morning it was cold and raining in Moscow. I paid 4000 rubles for the ticket to Sochi because platskartni vagon in the train to Adler was not available, and the cupe class costs the same than the airplane. I was given only a small sandwich of kalbasa and a bad tea, on board. Here in Sukhum life is cheaper than in Moscow, and I had a local piva for 20 rubles, half a litre beer, and a shshlik of khru khru (pig) for only 100 rubles.

V. T. russian member Kutnetsov helped me with information. Thanks.

soon will add more info and pictures.
I hope that in South Ossetia, where I am now heading, I will not have any problems with the Georgians for having been in rebel Abkhazia...

New Athos Monastery

This monastery is a must during your visit to Abkhazia.
I spent 3 nights there like a pilgrim.
I am eating local food

Food and wine

Life in Abkhazia is cheaper than in Russia. Wines are delicious!

I'd be very interested to know how to get here as I thought foreigners are not allowed in from Sochi. Did you get a Geogian visa beforehand or just contacted the Rep. of Abkhasia for their visa?
