There are regular flights to get to Saint Pierre from Halifax or Montreal, and boats from Newfoundland.
Saint Pierre is France in North America, with all the advantages (good food, good wines and croissants, pate and delicious cheeses, etc.), but also with all the disadvantages (everything is very expensive). I arrived there in winter and could not sleep in the beach, so I was forced to find an accommodation, and the cheapest, after bargaining, was 30 euros with breakfast in a private house.
They have a Jai Alai from the Basques, who were the first who colonized the islands. In the Saint Pierre et Miquelon flag there is a "IKURRIŅA" from the Basque Country (see the picture. The ikurrina is up on the left).
Miquelon island is much bigger than Saint Pierre, but much less populated.
The inhabitants are extremely friendly. The day I wanted to go back to Canada, several people told me:
- Oh! why you want to leave so soon. Stay with us more time to know better our traditions and gastronomy. Please, do not go yet to Canada...
