Hard to get to this new independent country. I took a marshrutka from Gori to the border, and walked. Nobody noticed me, and I crossed the United Nations post, then the Georgian's, then the neutral no man's land, and finally the Ossetians and the Russian control. Going out I was discovered by the georgians, but said that I was not succesful to visit the city, and let me proceed back to Gori, in Georgia.
The sign says that South Ossetia is already independent 17 years, although, for the time being, the country is not recognized by the United Nations. They will wait 17 more years, if necessary. Sure, South Ossetians do not want to be part of Georgia.
In the picture, behind of me, you can see Kosta Khetagurov monument - national poet of the Ossetian people. |
