It was a difficult choice to make via the Internet but I narrowed it down to either the Movenpick or Crown Plaza. My decision was based on services/star-ratings (the only 5 star hotels nearby) reviews and location (both very close to the park's entrance, Sofitel and Marriott immediately lost out as they are shuttle rides away) - and still after returning it's a hard toss. Movenpick has better architecture, spectacular fountains, Middle Eastern decor, and much better shops. However the Crown Plaza, even though it's plain standard Crown Plaza decor is left lacking to say the least, the location is amazing as it backs up to Petra National Park which allows for amazing views from most all of the rooms plus it has a pool.
Both hotels are just a short walk (very short walk) to the visitors center and entrance of Petra. I ended up at the Crown Plaza, the service was great and the bell captain was exceptionally courteous. So for the price difference, I can shop at Movenpick and enjoy the view at the Crown Plaza!
BRING CASH - there is NO CASH machine at the hotel nor at the Movenpick. The nearest ATM is about a 2 mile walk (or taxi ride) up a hill. The hotel was courteous enough to allow me to get cash against my credit card, but only $20 USD (I begged for $50 and the obliged) and the park only takes cash (entrance, tours, etc all cash) Petra (the park) is expensive and you will need lots of cash.
Unique Qualities: They have a very nice restaurant in Petra at the bottom, past the Treasury and the food was excellent! "Basin Restaurant" and everything could be charged to the room.
