| | Hundreds of craters Looking at spectacular sunsets, scaling rugged terrain and marvelling at mysterious stone work is a recipe for an out-of-this-word sensation. Easter Island has all the components to make you feel you are in a unique place. What Nature has on offer is a volcanic island with miles of wind-blown rocky shore. For those who are in need of it, Nature has reserved Anakena beach with its balm sands and calm waters. Then come the hundreds of craters, all welcoming you and your passion for trekking. In your way dogging the rocks you will find lakes, caves and your new friends - dogs and horses. They will follow you in your endeavours to unveil the mystery of the island and point you in the right direction. Just like milestones, the ahus follow along the coast with measured regularity to hail your advance. Standing or lying, in good shape or broken, the moai are there to fill in the air with mystery and make you wonder about their and your purpose in life. |

| | Rugged landscapes Rugged landscapes and history is a Goosebumps-giving phenomenon. Moreover, there is all this talk (and action) of different PHD chasing fellows who gladly present the visitor with numerous versions of what happened and what for sure did not happen. Plus there are the interpretations of the old island folk and the interpretations of their interpretations. Inevitably, as in many other parts of the world bestowed with enigmatic furniture, the main line is that yes, the locals did it and they surely came from somewhere else, lead by a great king (most likely related to the gods, even the British Queen claims to have been installed by them). What is particularly intriguing in the Easter Island case is that there are no remnants of lavish life style of the leaders (kings, queens, imams etc.) To those who are particularly insistent on the simple connection between the henhouse custodians and the moais I would offer a year of cave living and lichen soup with a bone or two of chicken every other day. If at the end of this test they still have in mind carving a huge statue just to commemorate their great-great grandfather I will be inclined to believe all the nonsense that is being aired on the island. (Warning: This experience in not as photogenic as crossing the Pacific on KonTiki) |
