Once in Cairns there are not many options considering the location of the city. One has to dive, snorkel or sail no matter what. It gets a bit tricky if the time available is no more than one full day; than it becomes not only which option to go for but whether it is going to be a nice weather or not. My luck was not that great – “mostly fine” was left for another day. As a result of this unfortunate development, Fitzroy island looked like a good choice, considering that the boat that was servicing it was much bigger than the toy boats that were heading towards the Green island, for example. They say that once wet you are not afraid of the rain. Yes, but the colour of the corals which you are supposed to see lose a great deal of their intensity and thus render the exercise useless.

Walking in the rain is not much fun either. Faced with no much choice I opted for the hike up to the lighthouse (closed of course). The reward was the wildlife in the form of several types of peculiar birds – white parrots, funny looking hens with pyramid-shaped crests and so on.
The most exiting part of the trip was the crossing of the channel back to Cairns, where a group of whales was in the mood to show there finest jumps – in some cases the whole body minus the tail were out of the water. It was very much like the pictures from the brochures one would see in the tourist agencies
