Slovakia - heart of the Europe

High Tatra Mountain
Welcome to Slovakia - the very heart of the Europe. My land is one of the most beautiful countries on the continent. It is also one of the most obscure. While tourists flock to the nearby cities of Prague, Krakow, Vienna and Budapest, they often give this country a miss, save a day or two in the capital city of Bratislava en route to other glitzier destinations. But everone who have ever spent any time in Slovakia can verify, this is a country deserving of a closer look.
Please come back to my page, it is still in construction.
Bojnice Castle
The Slovak Republic is one of two countries established on January 1,1993 through the peaceful division of the former Czechoslovakia. For centuries it was a constituent part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. After 1918 became a dynamic part of the democratic Czechoslovakia. Today, it is an attractive example of the modern world which, due to an extraordinary favour of fate, has not lost its human dimension, linking Central European spirit with the temperament and picturesqueness of Slavic folk culture.
Slovakia has a population of 5 million. The southern part of the country is inhabited by a sizeable Hungarian minority, while Ruthenians and Roma live in the eastern part of the country, all keeping their language, culture and way of life with government support.

The Slovak national anthem

Nad Tatrou sa byska, hromy divo biju,
Lightning flashes over the Tatras, the thunder pounds wildly.
Zastavme ich bratia ved sa ony stratia, Slovaci oziju.
Let them pause, brothers, they will surely disappear, the Slovaks will revive.
To Slovensko nase dosial dlho spalo.
This Slovakia of ours has been fast asleep until now.
Ale blesky hromu vzbudzuju ho k tomu, aby sa prebralo.
But the thunder and lightning are encouraging it to come alive.
