AT 4 FLOORS DOLLS and DOLLHOUSES and MINIATURE SHOPS are waiting for you. They represent those of the last 2 Centuries. There are miniatures of modern buildings too and......yes, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT COLLECTIONS OF TEDDY BEARS IN THE WORLD, MORE THAN 2000 pieces.......amazing feast for the eyes... and UNIQUE in the WORLD. They are exhibited in an unusual way; not according to category, but mixed in imaginatively arranged scenes. There are over 6000 exhibits on display in these 4 floors, so it may be clear that this is one of the largest of its kind in Europe! An interactive information system guarantees fascinating background details...... But not to be touched, which is understandable but a pity!

A visit to the NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM is like a journey to corners of the world, some unknown to you and me, others familiar, that depends... Our exhibition shows local as well as exotic animals. When you walk through the DINOSAUR hall or look at the numerous (really numerous) fossils or bizarre, colourful minerals, you can feel the distant past appear.... You can observe LIVING animals in terrariums. Tiny creatures become visible under the magnifying glass. All in all: an invitation for a rainy or very cold day!!

All kind of info concerning life, religion, art and social intercourse can be found in the departments on the South Seas, Indonesia, America and Africa. BASEL is full of surprise, you only have to go and search for them!! To make this easier for you you can use the Oldtimer-Tram you can see in the photograph. Of course there is an ALTSTADT and a NEUSTADT....you just have to hop on this tram and see BASEL, situated in a 3 country-corner.... I won't tell you the route, but you can trust me: it is surprisingly nice and the views are so diverse! The TRAM starts: each Sunday 10.30AM from Tramstation SBB. You can buy a ticket while on the tram. Your ride will take a full hour and believe me you can see A LOT in an hour.....being driven through this city! It will be a guided tours: explanation will be given in English, German and French! For more info: have a look at the website or email them........see below!

Things To Do: THE TINGUELYMUSEUM....

This Museum is dedicated to the life and work of Jean Tinguely who was a major sculptor in iron. It was opened in October 1996 and is funded by F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG. The building is very beautiful and friendly, wonderfully located. A place surrounded by ponds is always a real pleasure: water adds so much extra to a place. The permanent exhibition shows the artist's works from the beginning in the 50s with the motor-driven reliefs, the drawing machines and scrap metal assemblages of the 60s, through the black-painted machine sculptures to the outsize 3 dimensional works and pandaemonic cycles of his last creative period. I know, this may sound a bit uninteresting and weird but believe me it is so very worthwhile going there: you won't regret your visit! You can reach the Museum by tram 31 / 36 to Tinguelymuseum and...the place is accessible for wheelchairs. And about opening times: Tuesdays through Sundays 11AM - 7PM..... Take the plunge and enjoy it!

Can't wait to visit Basel one day. |
