THE WONDERFUL CITY OF BASEL..... Basel is called the Cultural Heart of Switzerland and I think that summs up this great City!
It is a city of contrasts . Basel's history spans over 2000 years and comes to life in the numerous historical buildings and the ALTSTADT, the old part of the city!
The name BASILEA was recorded for the first time in 374 AD.
From the Cathedral, situated high over the river RHEIN, an impressive view opens up across KLEINBASEL (Lower Basel) on the right bank of the river to the mountainrange of the VOSGES, The BLACK FOREST and the JURA.
The widely-renowned Matthäus Merian resided in the former Monastery of Kleines Klingental.
Unmistakenly BASEL is the PORT, where an obelisk marks the junction of the SWISS, FRENCH AND GERMAN FRONTIERS, the so-called DREILäNDERECK.
Basel has some 200,000 inhabitants. In 1356 most of Basel was destroyed in an enormous earthquake but was rebuilt and is now the fascinating Old Town we see today!
Basel is a city where the young can develop themselves, while still preserving TRADITIONS in AGE-OLD GUILDS and SOCIETIES.
All the year round it is a pleasant city that will treat you to all kinds of specialities......for a list/calendar visit BASEL TOURISMUS, Schifflände 5, CH 4001 Basel Tel. +41 62 268 68 68 WWW.baseltourismus.ch info@baseltourismus.ch for emails!

This Card is your key to the sights and places of interest of BASEL
It gives you FREE admission to its 35 MUSEUMS, free admission to the ZOO, free city sightseeing-tours, free ferry boat rides, reduction on theatres and musical tickets, reductions for concerts and discothèques, reductions at a number of BASEL RESTAURANTS, discounts at various shops in BASEL and reductions on boat trips and taxi fares............. so my advice is: buy that BaselCard as soon as you arrive in town!
WHERE TO BUY ONE??
You can obtain one in your hotel or you can order one from Basel TOURISMUS
The address of Basel Tourismus is in the previous entrie on this intro page.

| | HELVETIA..... Switzerland has many official names: Suisse, Schweiz, Svizzera DUE TO THE 4 OFFICIAL LANGUAGES this country, that is about as large as The Netherlands, has.
This is the reason that on coins and banknotes as well as on stamps the Latin name "HELVETIA" is used.
This bronze HELVETIA was created by BETTINA EICHIN.
This is the Symbol figure sitting at the KLEINBASLER Bridge end of the MITTLEREN RHEINBRüCKE.
(Bridge on River Rhein)
Some 100 years BC the country was conquored by THE HELVETIANS but in 58 BC the Romans took over and then followed centuries of war and sieges etc. etc. but the name HELVETIA stuck!
Well, seeing her sitting here, she must be tired of it all and seems to be thinking: go ahead, I don't care anymore!!
But Switzerland is a affluent, flourishing country, with its 26 States that at the same time are the 26 Kantons together one STATE.........and there is PEACE......
ALL IN ALL A MOST ATTRACTIVE COUNTRY FOR A SUPERB HOLIDAY.........whatever season you choose to be there: it will be fantastic!

Can't wait to visit Basel one day. |
