lipica IS THE homeland OF THE NOBLE WHITE LIPICAN HORSES.
The place was founded in 1580 and can be counted amongst the oldest horse studs in the world, besides being a unique and most beautiful living cultural and natural monument in SLOVENIA.
One of the greatest Slovenian Artist, who elected Lipica his second and last dwelling, used to say: "Lipican horses are beautiful animals, they are the pride of Lipica......"
But don't think that the horses are the only attraction the stud farm can offer its visitors.....that would be a mistake...
Located in the vicinity of one of its oldest stables, there is the Art Gallery of AVGUST CERNIGOL with the permanent exhibition ot the artist's most outstanding works....
Not far away Gallery Kos offers works of Art and objects of local CRAFTSMANSHIP.
A number of magnificent sculptures in the park of Lipica can also be admired.
Visitors taking a walk in the surroundings can stop in the Valley of the Holy Virgin of Lourdes and admire the fountain, the last testimony of ancient times.
Nowadays, Lipica is a world-famous sports- and recreational centre with a sweet touch of tradition.
Visitors can relax there and spend an unforgettable holiday in that green oasis of Karts, surrounded by the mysterious SUBTERRANEAN KARSTIC WORLD, rich with Karstic Phenomena...in the shade of centuries-old LINDEN TREES AND OAKS under the blue skies of the MEDITERANNEAN.....
Here you see an entrance ticket and after having bought it the exciting waiting begins before the Gates are opened.
There is a guide for several language groups and luckily the English speaking group was a small one.
The estate of the horse stud Lipica, which extends over a vast cultivated Karst area, together with a herd of Lipican horses and a rich building- and artistic heritage, was given the status of the cultural monument of major importance for the Republic of Slovenia and was protected by a special Law passed on the 1st June 1996.
I was looking forward to this visit very much and yes, after some time the gates were opened and we started following our guide.......
This I had never known before: the horses are so wonderfully white but.....when the colts are born THEY ARE BLACK AND WILL STAY BLACK TO FIRST YEAR to afterwards slowly change to grey and then to white!!
Driving up to the gate we saw a (part of a) herd in the distance but they are quite well protected by trees and bushes.......shade when the sun is climbing high in the sky and well-hidden for people's prying eyes!
I didn't get an opportunity to take a photo, which I regret!!
ONCE INSIDE THE GUIDE SHOWED us a stable where we could admire the glorious horses, touch them and where we were told all kinds of things we didn't know.
They breed the horses as best they can.....some, not exactly perfect become horses for carriages, others are trained for the shows and others are kept to provide young as best and perfect as possible.....
And some are destined to become the finest riding horses....
After the walk through the park, to stables and ancient buildings and even a chapel (where you can get married!) we could watch the training in the box, which was great!
A not to miss place for everyone who loves noble horses.....
- Pros:FINE PLACE, PURE ENJOYMENT....
- Cons:NONE
- In a nutshell:AN ENJOYABLE PLACE, WORTHY OF YOUR VISIT!
