MUSEUM DER GROSSE LüBECKER MüNZSCHATZ
June 5th 1984 a house had to be pulled down and guess what?
In the old cellar a TREASURE was found....it had been hidden there for centuries....
The house was at AN DER OVERTRAVE 16 in the city centre and the TREASURE had been there for over 450 years.....
Over 24.000 coins (gold and silver) were found....green from being in the ground for so long but after cleaning shiny gold and silver.
It took years before it was clear WHO was the owner if this GREAT FIND, but in 1988 it was clear that the person who found it got half of it.
The piece of ground where the coins had been found and also the share the finder got came in possession of the country.
Nowadays there is a lovely exhibition and we can enjoy it and get to know particulars of the life of a MERCHANT, the way money was spent and kept and more....
By now you will be wanting to visit DER GROSSE LüBECKER MüNZSCHATZ and I would say: do so......afterwards you will e.g. know HOW MANY skins of squirrels WILL GO INTO A 1300 LITER BARREL and more interesting things.....
A real TREASURE.....

This MAAK-LINIE has 4 lovely boats with also lovely names.....they are called:

BRAASCH'S SMOKED MEAT....
Something completely different here: this is a place to be visited and you can do it, it is open to the public:
Monday through Friday 8AM - 6PM
Saturdays 9AM - midday!
And of course, you are asked, invited to TASTE their products, for free!!
They work according to old rules and practises and don't want to know about modern (fast) ways to prepare their HAM and other smoked MEAT....
Go and see and TASTE for yourself and....in the end you will buy, I am sure....

BUDDENBROOKS HOUSE LüBECK
You can find the famous BUDDENBROOK HOUSE in Mengstrasse nr. 4
It was built in 1758, in BAROQUE STYLE and was owned by the MANN family from 1841 - 1891.
It was pure good luck that during the air raid of 1942 (World War II bombardments) its façade escaped damage!!
Today it is the Heinrich and Thomas MANN CENTRE.
Heinrich and Thomas were brothers and both were authors.
Thomas lived from 1875 - 1955 and was preoccupied with the duality of artistic and practical life.
He has quite some books to his name such as: the BUDDENBROOKS, written in 1901, hence the name of this house.
This house was used as location for the television series THE BUDDENBROOKS.....

DIE ALTSTADT LüBECK
Seen from on top of the ST. PETRI TOWER it is clear where the ALTSTADT is...where to find the buildings with their tyipcal ancient gables and the lovely red roofs......
Dow there in 5 of these old buildings is the PUPPEN THEATER AND MUSEUM housed, which place is very worthy of a visit and at the riverbank is the GREAT restaurant: YACHTZIMMER, a place where you really should go.....
There was an air raid in 1942 on Lübeck and 2/3 of the city was destroyed but what was still in good order was restored with much care.....
Walk and enjoy the ALTSTADT.....

St. PETRIKIRCHE LüBECK
This is a 13th Century church located near river TRAVE.
This wonderful church has a tower (with a lift) where you can get to the top, which of course I did.
It was great to have that panorama view over ISLAND CITY LüBECK....
It is always a joy to see places where you want to go, which you want to see.....a very fine impression of a city, not to be missed!

DAS HOLSTENTOR, LüBECK.
This tower, or should I say these towers?, is the best known CITY TOWER dating from the LATE MIDDLE AGES.
The tower was rebuilt in the 15th Century and there are two inscriptions: CONCORDIA DOMI FORIS PAX, which means: Eintracht im Hause und Frieden vor der Toren(HARMONY WITHIN, PEACE WITHOUT) and the second inscription is: "S.P.Q.L." which means: Senatus Polulusque Lubecensis, der Senat und das Volk von Lübeck..
To my surprise I could enter the tower which houses a lovely, interesting museum on Lübeck's History and the symbol of Lübeck, the Tower itself.
Although traffic goes on and of along this place: don't walk on, but walk THROUGH the tower and you will enter a lovely and quiet park at the end of which 2 gigantic bronze lions are sitting on the grass, like guardians of the city!
In the photo the tower as I saw it from the top of the St. PETRI CHURCH where I climbed the tower.....

MARZIPAN SALON LüBECK
There is a real MARZIPAN-SALON in Lübeck where you can endulge yourself and taste the wonderful real Lübecker MARZIPAN (I don't like it....) which seems to be the best in the world!!
Of course you can also buy MARZIPAN here which must be a nice present, a sweet souvenir....
Here you can hear and see STORIES ABOUT MARZIPAN......die ganze Geschichte!!
On the second floor is a MUSEUM....do have a look there, it is a revelation.....
