HOLSTENTOR FROM ABOVE..... I took this photograph from top of the St. Petri church....... on an exceptionally sunny day.....
But I would love starting this page with a little bit of HISTORY......as always because isn't that out past on which the present is built??
Like HAMBURG and KAMPEN, ZWOLLE, DEVENTER, DOESBURG, STAVOREN, ZUTPHEN, HASSELT EN HATTEM in The Netherlands e.g., LüBECK is a HANSEATIC CITY , in old times referred to as "queen of the hanseatic league and the baltic sea" this city is still the BIGGEST Baltic port of Germany and is situated on the river TRAVE which flows into the Lübeck Bay near TRAVEMüNDE.
As in fact all cities, Lübeck started as a merchants' settlement Centuries ago.
From the 1630s Hamburg, Bremen and Lübeck (in Germany) had the prefix "HANSESTADT". I shall skip most of the dramatic history facts....and jump to the last one: on March 29th 1942, the night before Palm Sunday, Lübeck was the target of the first bomb-attack on a German City and about ONE FIFTH of the old town was destroyed: dear God, how awful, what a waste of innocent lives and heritage....
The town council, citizens and various institutions have devoted very much effort to rebuilding their city in post WW II years... One example is the reconstruction of the church steeples, thus restoring Lübeck's famous SKYLINE with the SEVEN SPIRES.... an unsuspecting visitor can't even guess what the city looked like after the Second World War and will think that it has always been as it is now......I have seen old photographs that tell a quite different story!

| ONCE BEAUTIFUL BELLS , LüBECK |
| | A SAD REMINDER..... As a reminder of what took place on thet 29th March 1942, these pieces of BRONZE that once were the bells high up in the tower of the St. Marienkirche , got their own place in the rebuilt church.
Seeing these remnants you can't, just can't imagine what it must have been like when they thundered down from high up, during that bomraid....I think everyone's readrums must have burst!
An impressive sight and a WARNING..... and yet, what have we done since those horrible days of the 1940s and despite WARNINGS LIKE THIS ONE: WAGED WAR, yes wo go on waging war, destroying EVERYTHING including OURSELVES.....
|
| | EXCEPTIONALLY BEAUTIFUL DAYS... As I told you I spent some exceptionally wonderful days in Lübeck and doesn't this look PEACEFUL and JOYFUL , as if never ever anything unpleasant or cruel has taken place.....
Enjoy LüBECK whenever you have a chance: it is very worthwhile a place to visit and explore.

Scallawags Sat Nov 17, 2007 12:57 UTC I strictly avoid the Yachtzimmer since a while: a German TV programme, which didn't tell the name of the place but I recognised it within 2 seconds, showed how a food inspector checked this place, kitchen, storage room, staff, etc. and it was disgusting! | matcrazy1 Thu Jul 22, 2004 19:48 UTC Very good page I enjoyed a lot. And interesting tips esp. on Museum of Puppet Theater and marzipan :-))) | RhineRoll Sun Jul 18, 2004 09:46 UTC I was recently recommending Lübeck to someone as a place to visit only to receive comments like "cold, uninspiring, monotonous"... It's delightful to read pages here telling things how they are! Great pages! I also agree with your comments on war. |
