NATIONAL MUSEUM OF ANTIQUITIES...

This mummie dates from the 1st - 2nd Century AD and is from Egypt.

Now please, read this interesting, exciting NEWS:

Together with the Acadmisch Medisch Centrum in Amsterdam (the AMC), the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden has put the entire collection of Egyptian mummies through a series of x-rays and CT scans. The last mummy – the mummy of a woman, almost three thousand years old - was scanned this week. The three-year project investigated a total of 133 mummies. Apart from unusual anatomical and medical aspects, the researchers also came across a number of notable archaeological finds: a doll was discovered in the abdomen of two mummies. The results of the research will be presented in a scientific publication and will be on view in a new, spectacular family exhibition on Egyptian mummies in autumn 2004. The Dutch broadcasting company the AVRO is currently preparing a TV documentary on mummies which is scheduled to be aired in autumn 2004.

Over the last three years, 31 human mummies, 74 animal mummies and 28 separate mummified body parts belonging to the museum’s collection have been put through a series of scans (using a computer tomography scanner and x-rays). This allowed the researchers to examine the mummies from inside without damaging them. The photos show the mummy bindings, the outer layer of the skin, soft body parts, the skeleton and skull. The research generated information on how the bodies were mummified, the age and gender of the deceased and the lives of the Ancient Egyptians in general. The researchers also came across a number of notable archaeological finds: a doll was found in the abdomen of two mummies. As yet, scientists are unable to explain the find as there are no known parallels. The scans show scarabs and amulets placed among the bindings and, in some cases, pectoral ornaments and necklaces with amulets.

From the scans it’s possible to see how carefully the mummification was performed, and whether the blood vessels and bones show traces of disease. The teeth of almost every mummy showed considerable wear and tear, probably due to sand that found its way into milled grains and flour. Some of the mummies proved to have hardening of the arteries, arthritis and other conditions related to old age. A number of the animal mummies seemed to have been killed by a blow to the head or broken neck.
The radiology department of the AMC worked with the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden on the project, often outside normal working hours. Radiologist Dr. W.K. Taconis studied the scan data for unusual anatomical and medical features. Dr. Maarten Raven, the curator of the museum’s Egyptian collection described the mummy bindings and ornaments and compared the scans with those of other mummies. Raven and Taconis will publish a book on their findings in autumn 2004, published by the academic publisher Brepols Publishers NV (Belgium).

The mummy research will be presented in an interactive family exhibition on Egyptian mummies in autumn 2004 in the museum in Leiden. Three identical versions of the exhibition will tour Europe, the United States, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

The mummy collection of the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden is one of the most famous of its kind in the world, made up of many complete mummies and a large number of animal mummies. It is the first time that a museum has conducted such large-scale research on a mummy collection using x-ray and CT scan technology. In the past, several mummies from the collections of the Manchester Museum and the British Museum (UK), among others, were analysed using the same method.

A rich, historic, old, world-famous city that I know so well. My daughter studied there for over 6 years at the famous University; she as a full-time student and I for a shorter time as a part-time one.

History of Art: opens millions of doors and windows to the WORLD of past and present: so enriching.

Together we studied, travelled, enjoyed, learned and were (and still are!) insatiable.

The best way to explore Leiden is ON FOOT : be sure that you wear comfortable shoes and go ahead....there is so much to discover and visit!

When you feel tired: there are more atmospheric, typically Dutch, typically Leiden restaurants and cafees then you will be able to find and visit!
Many of them at the waterfront because Leiden too, is a city with CANALS, RIVERS, STREAMS and thus most lovely places for terraces (there are even terraces on boats...) and do cross all the lovely bridges...

But do take care: tens of thousands of students (tens of thousands of bikes) make Leiden a busy, buzzing, lively CITY!

It is there, LEIDEN, ready to be enjoyed by you!

You won't be disappointed....and as I love saying: there is so much more to The Netherlands than Amsterdam!

AT THE CENTRAL (RAILWAY) STATION....

About ARCHITECTURE.......is this a beautiful "building"?? I have my doubts, but it sure is a fantastic "construction" that I have seen built through the years, the last years of the 1990s.......

(We travellers suffered a lot, lolol)

See all these bikes in front of the Railway Stations and there are more opposite the building because who wants/needs to travel by train cycles to the RWStation of course.

But PUBLIC TRANSPORTATIONS is perfect and there are plenty of buses to take you there......and of course numerous taxis.......

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION is RELIABLE, FREQUENT and EASY....ticket machines at the railway stations make things easier!
