BUBBLING BRUSSELS......... BRUSSELS is the Capital of my "neighbour" BELGIUM.
It is a gem of a city where we love to go and.....fortunately it is only 1.30 - 1.45 hours by car so you will understand that we.......yes, go there quite often for all kinds of reasons: there is the famous CHOCOLATE , people are kind and friendly, the city is a beauty, it is an excellent place to go for a shopping spree, it has Museums and the Guildhouses on the Grote Markt, "de kleine Boterstraat" and more nice places where fabulous CHEFS are cooking to treat their many hungry guests and lots and lots more to enjoy........so I would advise you: GO THERE!!!!!
The lively city center is thickly dotted with "TAVERNES, CAF?S AND RESTAURANTS AND..... LOTS OF ATTRACTIVE SHOPS..
The elegant St. HUBERTUS GALLERIES were the first covered shopping galeries of Europe and de names of the streets remind us of the trades function that BRUSSELS used to have......
And don't forget to go to DE MAROLLEN , that special quarter; photographs of my walks there are in the TRAVELOGUES, AS ALWAYS MADE WITH LOVE AND PLEASURE....
And...let me mention the tiresome LANGUAGE RIVALRY between Flemish (=Dutch) and French speakers , the fires of which are frequently fanned by politicians and students of language.
In spite of its BILINGUAL STATUS , Brussels is 85 % Francophone.
Since the creation of the REGION OF BRUSSELS , which has its own government, the Flemish minority has complained of difficulty in maintaining its identity and asserting itself in the face of French competition.
INDIVIDUALITY is the cornerstone of the Belgian personality: Flemish speakers won't yield to the French speaking majority without a fight (and neither would I!!) very often literally, as the quite violent demonstrations in the 1960s showed!

| BRONZE STATUE OF WOMAN BRUSSELS. |
THIS IS A WONDERFUL STATUE..... representing a proud woman, in a wonderfully proud attitude, face up to the light....... She is here to remind us to think of all the brave, courageous women who suffered so very much and often lost their lives during the FIRST WORLD WAR......and we never must forget them.........there are so many lessons to be learned about PEACE AND RESPECT......
|
THE WAR MEMORIAL ... in front of LE PALAIS DE JUSTICE.... In the TRAVELOGUE you can find the close up of the lower part..... 2 WORLD WARS , 2 TOO MANY....
