Getting TO/AROUND: We were again with our group from the University Leiden in The Netherlands, but a quite small group, which was great.

It's easier to listen to our professor and eventual guides.

We had spent our days in MADRID and went to BARCELONA by NIGHT-TRAIN.

This is a view of the small corridor and on the left are the "COUCHETTES" the places to sleep!!

We had the cheaper ones and had to sleep 6 per COUCHETTE, 2 x 3, one above the other.

It is very comfy once you are in the bed.....but before that......we had to laugh a lot and then concluded that it was best to change into pyjamas and arrange our sheets and blankets one by one......

Unfortunately there is no room for 6 suitcases which made things so difficult.

We were obliged to lock the door on the inside because there seem to happen some strange things on these trains during the night.

For quite some time I was in the corridor, watching MADRID disappear in the darkness.

Then I went to sleep for 700 km. to wake up in BARCELONA.

Getting TO/AROUND: No one can visit BARCELONA without walking / exploring its very old heart for some hours and... on foot!
Start e.g. at the Plaça Nova or the Plaça de la Seu (the square in front of the old Cathedral), walk into the Carrer del Bisbe Irurtia via Portal del Bisbe. The Romanesque towers you see there date back to the Roman times.
Pass the Bishop's Palau and turn to the right to the picturesque Plaça Sant Felip and see the CLOISTER at your left hand. The Carrer del Bisbe Irurtia goes along between the Casa dels Canonges and the decorated façade (Renaissance) of the Palau de la Generalitat., which is the homebase of a autonomous = self=governing CATALUNYA.
When you are once again at the Plaça Sant Jaume, you can see the Ajuntament (Casa de la Ciudad = town hall) exactly opposite the Generalitat.

The Plaça del Rei, hidden north of the Cathedral is still more INPRESSIVE.
Like for the Museu d'Historia de la Ciudad, stone by stone has been brought here to complete it in style. It contains parts of the former Royal Palau and a Gothic hall, de Saò de Tinell, where Columbus announced the success of his first journey to Ferdinand and Isabella.

The Plaça Ramon Berenguer el Gran, where the Statue of Berenguer II stands offers a wonderful panorama on the Roman Walls outside the Barri Gitic.

Of course you can walk however you want to go but knowing where you go is always nice!

I hope you enjoy my little bits if history!

For a sightseeing tour to and through other destinations the METRO is easiest and quickest!

Getting TO/AROUND: The Public Transportation in SPAIN is very good, frequent, punctual and reliable.

But most important are the two following reason to take a bus every now and then: it is quite cheap, cheaper than hiring a car or go somewhere by taxi and it is a great opportunity to see lots and lots of the country and countryside!

Give it a try and you will be enthousiastic too!

Getting TO/AROUND: I met this Camel in the streets of BARCELONA and he offered me a lift......

Better safe than sorry he must have thought because despite the wonderful evening he was wearing his raincoat and Southwester
    maybe it was his DISGUISE.....

    He made me laugh...

    By Plane: BY PLANE......

    Category: Airplane
Getting TO/AROUND: To be able to enjoy every minit of this trip we went (we is our group of students, learning the Spanish language) by plane.

We had our own guide and bus and.....our prof. had lived in Spain for over 10 years.

At the Airport I saw this plane and I love those fantastic fins.It made me think of Mrs. Prime Minister (now Lady) Thatcher who once, at a reception at an Airport saw a scale model and found it so disgusting that she threw a tissue over the little, funny fin!

    How ridiculous......

I love them, see these gulls and the whale/dolphin!!
