Who thinks of CORDOBA thinks of the famous MEZQUITA.
A bit of History... The Romans first arrived in Corduba, as it was known at that time, in 206 B.C. and made it an official colony in 169 B.C. Soon patrician Roman families settled here and Corduba became the capital of Lower Hispania. Cordoba was virtually destroyed when barbarian tribes invaded from Northern Europe in the Vth Century but recovered slowly until in 711 Arabs from North Africa conquered the city and made it the capital of al-Andalus, which was the beginning of a new period of splendour.....
There must have been a time that Córdoba equalled Constantinople and Baghdad in wealth and power! It was famous for its libraries and scholars and is sais to have contained some 3,000 MOSQUES and 100,000 SHOPS at its height.
Once Córdoba's walls stretched for 22 km at the beginning of the XIth Century, which means that the city was more extensive in the middle ages than it is today!
The present-day historical city centre occupies no more than a few hectares on the banks of the river GUADALQUIVIR, much too small an area for what was in the XIth Century the most powerful and prestigious city in the western world!
Yet it is a real must to visit this wonderful, beautiful, atmospheric city and I am sure that (like me) you will want to go back there again....
Apart from the MEZQUITA / CATEDRAL there is so much more to enjoy there:
the citadel (Alcàzar) de los Reyes Cristianos the Julio Romero de Torres Museum the Synagogue the Taurine Museum the Archeological Museum the Calleja de Las Flores the Roman Bridge the Fine Arts Museum the Calahorra Tower and more much more....
QUOTE:
"Córdoba is not a decadent town, one of thos haughty cities languishing in its own past, in which life becomes stifled (....) it maintains its own elegant poise, made of the web of dreams and the substance of time itself....; there are places here which seem to contain the entire essence of the universe hidden and untouched."
Antonio Munoz Molina
In the Amador de los Rios is a tourist office.....
