Trelleborg Travel Guide: 5 reviews and 11 photos
In the 1250s TRELLEBORG was given as a dowry to the Danish Princess SOPHIE when she married VALDEMAR of SWEDEN.
It was the HERRING that made it such a rich place and nowadays its richess still comes from the sea but now in the form of lively ferry traffic to Northern Germany.
When you are looking for the Tourist Office: it is in the 19th Century WAREHOUSE at Hamngata 4, opposite the Railway station ,
Quite near is the attractive GAMLA TORG witch the Mikaeli-Brunn, a lovely fountain.
It is next to this TORG that you will find the reconstructed VIKING FORT and the RUNE STONE in the photo here, is at the entrance of the terrain, as a sort of welcome to the visitors.
This Fort shows us what immense buildings the VIKINGS were able to build: everything done by hand and the whole constructed of wood and wood and wood.....what a craftsmanshiop here.....formidable.
They, the women and children must have felt safe here, while their men were at sea....discovering new countries....
Trelleborg has a nice watertower and another fountain called ' SEA SERPENT", a MUSEUM and more...
The Museum's archeology section shows FINDS from Skateholm, a STONE AGE burial site (5000 BC).
There is also some ethnography, a VIKING section a shop and restaurant.
It also boatsts inviting beaches, which is great whever the weather is fine but.....at the time I was there it was far too windy, rainy and cold to even dream of visiting the beach!
Nearby Trellborg, is Sweden's most SOUTHERLY POINT "SEVRIGES SYDLIGASTE UDDE" and you will see the large statue of a goose, a reference to Selma Lagerl?f's much-loved children's geopraphy of SWEDEN where little NILS HOLGERSSON travels onthe back of a goose all over the country, starting here....
Funny: at the harbour is a signpost with SURPRISING distances to MOSCOW, LONDON and so on.....enjoy some smoked EEL here at one of the little restaurants....
And this photo shows how stormy and cold that day was.....grey skies..in VIKING LAND....
The era of the VIKINGS (800 - 1050 Christian Era) was characterised by great expanionist movements EASTWARD, with the aim of exchanging merchandize and sacking the territories along the BALTIC COAST and the banks of the rivers which now flow through the RUASSIAN PLANES.
A significant testimony to the period is provided by the BILDSTANR, massive stone figures, decorated with inscriptions in runic CHARACTERS, intended to commemorate some battle of illustrious personality, or to give thanks to the gods.
In UPPLAND quite elaborate carved stones can be seen, with interwoven decorations dating back to the last VIKING MIGRATIONS, around the 11th Century!
- Pros:A VERY INTERESTING PLACE......
- Cons:NONE WHATSOEVER....
- In a nutshell:A PLACE OF HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE......
