ONE OF MY FAVOURITE PLACES.....

ELEGANCE & HARMONY....

Stanislas I once was King of Poland but was dethroned in 1735 and luckily his son-in-law Louis XV of France managed to pass him the DUKEDOM of LOTHARINGEN = LORRAINE.

Together with his architect H?R? he connected the new town with his palace and designed an unequalled elegant and harmonious city centre, the Palais Royal, which is now the PLACE STANISLAS.

You will see there the impressive H?TEL DE VILLE and the ARC DE TRIOMPHE.....

The entrances to the PLACE STANISLAS are decorated with playfully wrought golden gates......in the corners are wonderful fountains....

The nicest view you habe from the top floor of the TOWN HALL!

MOST FAMOUS is Nancy also for the small but oh, so precious museum de Musée de l'ECOLE DE NANCY: Art Nouveau and Art D?co, Jugendstil.......

Just walk there and do enjoy the beauty of it all, also of the garden surrounding the old building, which actually is situated in an area where you wouldn't expect it.

The works of Art you can admire are so gorgeous especially because of the fact that the artist let themselves be inspired by nature and where can we find more beauty than in NATURE. Mother Earth is so phenomenal an artist, unequalled.....

SURPRISE: buy a combi-ticket for 2-3 museums and let yourself be surprised by what there is in the sousterrain of le MUS?E DES BEAUX ARTS........... I was feeling sooooo happy there...........there was no one except me so I had plenty of time and the quiet atmosphere of all the beauty that surrounded me and believe me, I did enjoy it to the full, however ill I felt by my bronchitis/ fever............. GREAT EXPERIENCE.....

In the photo: THE NEPTUNE FOUNTAIN designed by GUIBAL & LAMOURS: this place is the highlight of the classical architecture of Nancy!

At the corner of the square you can find the BUREAU DU TOURISME always the first place to visit........

THROUGH THE ARC DE TRIOMPHE....

Walking past the Arc de Triomphe is the elongated Place de la Carrière, with lovely 18th Century houses on both sides.....

At your right hand side is the great PARC DE LA PéPINIèRE where I took this photo of a lovely band-stand!

A great place to flee from the crowd and find peace and quiet and beautiful, dignified trees........lots of extraordinary plants and flowers...
bathing in green-coloured late-summer green!

Walking on you will see the PALAIS DU GOUVERNEMENT with its impressive peristyle (colonnade)

LAMPE éGLANTINE 1897.....

The brothers DAUM, Jean Louis Auguste and Jean Antonin, invented complicated ways to better the technique of colouring glass.

The DAUM FIRM was founded in 1875.

They started the production of glass and not "normal" glass object but objects with HIGH ARTISTIC VALUE.

It wouldn't surprise me if they got their inspiration from the EMILE GALL? works of Art that brought the first JUGENTSTIL GLASS on the market.

This is why the names GALL? & DAUM are often used in one and the same breath.

Both belong to the greatest representatives of LORRAINE JUGENDSTIL GLASS.
They might have had the same ideas but their works differ distinctively.
Even when the signatures can't be read an expert can see if it is DAUM or GALL?.......
It is clear that Daum's ideas were the greatests and he must have been the most gifted artist....

Go to the MUS?E DES BEAUX ART and go down the stairs to the sousterrain and enjoy the glass boxes / vitrines filled with the most breathtaking glass lights, bowls and more...........reaaly not to be missed for who loves colours and Jugendstil lines and curves!

NOTE: combi-tickets are cheaper!!

The Mus?e also has a fine shop with lovely gift articles and great (but expensive) books on Daum, Gall?, Architecture and more.......

I SHALL SHOW YOU SOME MORE BEAUTIFUL DAUM WORKS OF ART IN THE 1ST TRAVELOGUE

This page is fantastic! I lived in Nancy for a few years, and I can certify that your page is excellent! Place Stanislas is extremely elegant. Hard to find a non-smoking room that does not smell of smoke in France...
