LA TOUR EIFFEL....

THE FAMOUS: LA TOUR EIFFEL....

PARIS = LA TOUR EIFFEL = PARIS

At the time is was constructed it was the world's highest building: 300 metres in height!

ABOUT THE CONSTRUCTION:

THE FIRST PLAN DATES BACK TO 1884, THE FINAL PLAN TO 1886 and then the work could start: from 1887 - 1889 they worked and worked!

5000 sheets of paper, measuring 1 metre x 0,80 metre were used!

300 "acrobats" (techniciens) put all pieces in place and they use over 2,000,000,000 = 2 million of BOLTS.

In 1909, the end of the WORLD EXHIBITION, it was decided not to demolish the TOUR EIFFEL.....

ITS WEIGHT? 7.000 tons!

each square cm. of the ground carries the weight of 4 kg..

DEPENDING ON temperatures: the height can differ some 15 cm. which is amazing, isn't it?

There are 3 platforms: the first at a height of 57 m., the second at 115 m. and the third at 274 m........and that really IS high!!

You can go up there by elevator and EVERYONE who visits PARIS MUST go up the EIFFEL TOWER: otherwise you haven't been there!

The TOWER is situated in a splendid place: les Champs-de-Mars..............

It still is one of the most glorious architectural work of the 18th Century and luckily we still can enjoy it!

Of course you can go up there en do so!!
There even is a post office, higher up a restaurant and lovely gift shops.

This really is a must! !
The very idea that it was on the brink of being demolished makes me shiver!! It was and IS so very special!

LES BORDS DE SEINE ET NOTRE DAME

PARIS LES BORDS DE SEINE...

ET NOTRE DAME....

The Seine is the river that divides PARIS and so they talk about the RIVE GAUCHE and the RIVE DROITE which means left and right river bank.

There are quite steep steps that lead you down and it is wonderful to walk or sit their, to let it all sink in.....

In the background the wonderful Cathedral NOTRE DAME and I WOULD ADVISE YOU TO CLIMB UP THERE TO ENJOY THE MOST WONDERFUL VIEW OVER PARIS...

NOTRE DAME was built between 1180 - 1223. The île-de-France has always been the most important starting point of PARIS......there were so many swamps around the river SEINE, that this little Island must have been the best place to start building....

There had been other, smaller churches in this same place but the NOTRE DAME had to be the largest CATHEDRAL ever...

This building has been eye-witness to so many MOST IMPORTANT EVENTS that I wish it could tell us its stories and experiences, thoughts and feelings.....
How, sweet CATHEDRAL, about the "le Sacre" of NAPOLéON BONAPARTE in 1804?
It is said that Pope PIUS VII crowned Napoléon but..........to the utter horror of all present HE CROWNED HIMSELF!! Yes, he took the crown, put it on his head and the little man declared himself: KAISER, CAESAR, EMPEROR NAPOLéON!

The CATHEDRAL has suffered a lot: it was used as a ware-house at some time, its statues were pulled down.........but it still stands strong!

A visit here is also a MUST.....
Enjoy the silence, the tranquility, admire the architectural beauty, feel the light, that falls through the stained glass windows on your face.....and when you feel in a romantic mood, do as the people in this postcard: walk along the river SEINE and set yourself in a quiet place and dream away.........

I used to live in the MARAIS, so I'm glad to hear it is your favourite area in Paris. You've been so lucky for years to have the Thalys high speed trains to and from Paris. Now we finally have a fast ICE train from Frankfurt and a TGV from Stuttgart.
