Poprad... Slovak republic

by RandomDreamer - last update: Dec 26, 2004

Apart from the bus and train station there's not too much for the traveller in Poprad. I know this may be a bit narrow minded of me but I was trusting the Lonely Planet guide on this and I didn't fancy venturing too far as my "Blatant traveller with backpack" persona had already attracted the attention of one very over eager beggar.

It's a great transport hub with buses and trains to anywhere in Slovakia (it is on the Bratislava - Zilina - Kosice express train route) and with the mountain railway upto the ski resorts in the High Tatras. Otherwise, it seems a large and industrial city that doesn't get the maintainance or investment of Bratislava.

English is hardly spoken here so you may need to blag a little to get food and rail tickets. For food, there is a big supermarket near the station (you'll fail to be fed in the cafe in the bus station). A little spoken German will go a long way.

A RE-THINK... okay. A lot of people have told me this is a quite nice place. I suppose just not round the bus station. I'm just Mr Judgemental sometimes so pls ignore my snide snipes at Poprad :-)

If you have the time to walk in to the centre of Poprad you'll be surprised to find that it is really pretty. New shops, some good restaurants and in Dec Christmas lights and gluwein!
