May 15 is the feast day of San Isidro Labrador and the townsfolk of Lucban decorate their homes and compete in the Pahiyas Festival. They use kipings (colorful dried rice shaped like leaves and flowers), hats, crafts and their produce as a thanksgiving to their patron saint for a bountiful harvest.
If you like looking at the decorated houses during daytime, you would also appreciate the nighttime effects of lights on the decorated houses.
Not all houses in Lucban participate in the Pahiyas Festival. Only the houses on the streets where the procession will pass through join the festival. The route of the procession changes every year. |
| Grotto of Healing and Purification |
| | About 15 minutes ride from Lucban town proper, another must see is the Grotto of Healing and Purification and located at the foot of the grotto is Kamay ni Hesus (Hands of Jesus) Healing Church. The grotto and the church were "projects" of healing priest Rev. Fr. Joey Faller.
The grotto is said to be the 3rd highest and has approximately 300 steps to and fro the top. You also cross the grotto from side to side, following the Way or Stations of the Cross.
The grotto is also dedicated to the sick people (physically and spiritually). I was told by someone from Lucban that when the grotto was still on its finishing stage and a lot of visitors and devotees went up the grotto and took their pictures, the developed pictures were said to be blurred. The townsfolks believed that the grotto was not ready yet for any "publicity." But after the inaugural last Dec. 2004, the pictures taken from then on were clear. |
And for the adventurous type, you may want to go up hiking/climbing the mystical Mt. Banahaw. Don't forget to inform local authorities your intention of going up the mountain.
Mt. Banahaw is so mystical that on ordinary days, it does not want to be photographed. It is seldom that tourists can capture the beauty of the mountain. We were fortunate during the recent Pahiyas Festival that Mt. Banahaw "allowed" us to take its picture. | | | Mt. Banahaw on a clear day |
