Hong Kong is largely thought of as a shopping destination by many living around the region. Of course, there is no smoke without fire - in the city, the shops are innumerable!
In Kowloon, you can find shopping malls on the waterfront , stuffy makeshift stalls on Temple Street, small shops along Nathan Road, cramped malls in Mongkok and small shops lining Fa Yuen Street. On HK Island, there're funky shops at Causeway Bay jostling with big malls like Sogo, tiny nondescript shops in Wanchai, large shiny malls in Central, and upmarket chic for sale near SoHo. There is even a mid-sized mall perched atop the Victoria Peak! It's impossible to not understand why its a shopping paradise ... |
| | But my favourite things about Hong Kong have little to do with shopping. On Hong Kong Island, I took every opportunity to ride the electric trams that ply the island and hardly used the subway. I rode twice on the Mine Train in Ocean Park despite the long queues, because it was such a dazzling ride. I shared tables with locals at small crowded eateries, because thats where the best food is. I enjoyed every moment of the cruise around the harbour (perhaps the best things are indeed for free!). I spent an extra day up in the misty Ngong Ping because I was taken by the excellent hiking trails.
I will be back on the electric trams, in the small eateries and the hiking trails when I visit Hong Kong again. That's a promise! And what's more, there's still Lamma Island, Cheung Chau, the New Territories and Sai Kung to discover!
