It says in my guide book that Chiang Mai, being at a higher altitude than Bangkok and the southern cities, has a drier and cooler climate. I can't say I noticed the difference, though. It was still hot, and it didn't rain once (not when I was conscious, anyway!). But the climate change prob'ly becomes more apparent as you head towards the hills (which, unlike most visitors to Chiang Mai, I didn't).

| Durians at Warowot Market! |
| | Impressions of the City Chiangmai city has its moments of madness and slices of tranquility.
It has its traffic jams and polluted air. It has colourful, glittering wats and crowded wet markets. It has guesthouses hidden in small lanes and western-style cafes and English bookshops along the main streets.
Stroll along the Ping River in quiet contemplation. Squeeze through the crowded Wariwat Market for some fresh fruit. Stand and marvel at the Tha Pha Gate as you try to cross the congested Tha Phae Road junction. Lose your way in the quiet residential mazes but don't panic - you'll find a familiar place sooner or later!
Discover the side of Chiangmai without riding elephants, water rafting or trekking - it's charming!
