just can't get enough of it! | A buddha smiles at Wat Phra Kaeo |
It is true that Bangkok is a shopping paradise. It has night markets, weekend markets, big markets, small markets, huge shopping malls, small shopping complexes, large departmental stores and tiny alley shops.
But besides the millions of shops, you'll invariably notice the temples, or wats. These are places of worship that double up as tourist attractions. Some of the most visited wats in the city include Wat Pho, Wat Phra Kaeo and Wat Arun, all of which are in close vacinity of the Grand Palace. These wats are located in sprawling compounds and boast some spectacular construction from as far back as the 1800s.
Of course, visitors have to dress appropriately when visiting a wat. That means that shoulders should be covered, bottoms should reach up to the knees, and no hats. When entering a prayer hall, visitors will also be required to remove their shoes.
Other areas of interest in or around Bangkok city include Chinatown, Rattanakosin, Dusit, the old farang quarter, Thon Buri and eastern Bangkok.

| Vimanmek Palace, Dusit Park |
| | Dusit Dusit is a neighbourhood in northern Bangkok that houses a number of important government offices and royal residences that were moved to avoid the congestion around the Grand Palace.
Visitors to the area will not want to miss the Chitralada Palace, Vimanmek Palace, the Marble Temple, the National Assembly building and Dusit Zoo. Remember to start early as some of these places close at about 4pm daily.
The Chitralada Palace is the current residence of King Bhumibol Adulyadej and is closed to the public.
