Nightlife Spot: Waidspeicher Theater

"Theater Waidspeicher is a repertory theatre with 4 - 5 productions for adults and about 10 productions for children and teenagers. There are 5 - 7 new productions as well as 50 - 60 guest performances in Germany, Europe and overseas every season. Over 30,000 visitors visit our theatre on the Domplatz in Erfurt every year to see one or more of the almost 300 performances per season.
The Name "Waidspeicher"
The Waidspeicher (woad storage, woad warehouse), built between 1540 and 1560, was originally a building for storing and processing woad (in German "Waid"), an unprepossessing plant from which in an extensive procedure the blue dye was obtained for textiles (blue-printing).
There were a lot of of such storages beause woad in the Middle Ages was the main source of affluence and wealth for the state capital Erfurt: woad was the raw material for making the blue dyes used in the textile industry until it was displaced by indigo.
From 1983 until 1986 the listed building was completely restored and turned into the steady home for the puppet theatre and the cabaret, both playing since 1979.
The Theatre
Our theatre has 142-seat auditorium and 30 employees.
The artistst are graduates of: the Drama School „Ernst Busch", Berlin
State School for Music and Interpretative Art, Stuttgart
The ensemble works with diverse modern and traditional theater forms:
drama, mask theatre, marionette play hand and rod puppets, shadow theatre, modern forms, like computeranimations and videoscreening, and more.
