Erfurt is not only the capital city of the Free State of Thuringia but it is also the state’s largest city with a population of nearly 200000 citizens and an area of approx. 269 km². The first documentary reference to Erfurt dates back to 742 AD. Erfurt also has a university and the city’s cultural, intellectual and economic dominance drew great personalities like Luther (Augustinian Monastery), Adam Ries (mathematician), Goethe, Schiller, Herder, Wieland, Bach.E.g. the Merchants’ Church is that church wherein J. S. Bach’s parents married. Names like W. v. Humboldt, Zsar Alexander and Napoleon are connected with Erfurt.
There are many carefully restored Renaissance and half-timbered houses, many other historical buildings which together with the Krämerbrücke make up one of the best preserved medieval city centres in Germany. At one time Erfurt gained the title "Rome of Thuringia". It was given on account of the city’s 36 parish churches and chapels as well as its 15 monasteries and other ecclesiastical buildings. The capital city of Thuringia is without a doubt one of the most beautiful cities in Germany.
Since the millennium turning until the year 1802, the archbishop of Mainz also was the sovereign of the town and sovereign of the country. For this reason the half of the arms of Rhine town Mainz is found today in the city arms of Erfurt. |
