"Nova Kakhovka... my little town" Nova Kakhovka by Lensa

Nova Kakhovka Travel Guide: 14 reviews and 22 photos

I spent here about 20 years. I love it, I like to visit it, I like to stay there... and this is subjective, because it 's a town of my childhood.
Nova Kakhovka (population is approx. 80,000) is situated on the bank of the river Dnipro, and just 78 km from the oblast center Kherson.
It was founded in 1950 for builders of Kakhovka hydroelectric power station on the place of a little village called Klyuchevoe (known since 1891). "Klyuchevoe" means a spring, a sourse, as this place is full of clean pure underground springs.
On boundless steppe there are only high and silent "koorgany" (so called hills) reminding about fights of brave old Russian princes - "knyaz", about furious battles of forelock Zaporizhzhya Cossacks with Turkish janizaries and wild hordes of Crimean Tatars. And at the end of 1920 Kakhovka bridgehead witnessed a "fratricidal meat grinder" of Red Army men and armies of Vrangel.
The building of Kakhovka hydroelectric power station meant a lot for dry but rich soils of Kherson region and Crimea.
The dam and the power station itself would be named probably one of the "have to see" sightseeing places of the area.
Other attractive places of the town is it's center, the oldest town street Dnieprovsky prospect and a wonderful park along the river Dnipro.

Sports town

Nova Kakhovka is famous for its sportsmen, during former USSR as well as nowadays.
There's a good archery field "Dynamo" in Nova Kakhovka. Lyudmila Arzhannikova is an Olympic Champion (1987) in archery and she started her sports career in Nova Kakhovka. Nowadays there's a young promising girl Yuliya Reznikova who brought a bronze medal to Ukraine from Italy during Europe Championship (March 2004). (in a team)
There are also not bad tennis courts and a decent stadium in Nova Kakhovka. And great tennis players. Yuliana Fedak ranked 83 in the world. (http://www.medvedev.org/en/fedak.htm)
Vladislav Piskunov is known for good results in hammer-throwing.
Sergey Chuhrai is an Olympic Champion (1976) in boat-racing (canoe-paddling).
And they all started in Nova Kakhovka.
Maybe I forgot somebody else, but now you can see that Nova Kakhovka is a real sports town. And I am proud of it:-)

I just love this town.
