Power, Politics, History and Art Washington DC can hold it’s own against any world city as a center of power, politics, history and the arts. I always enjoy visiting DC. The many museums of the Smithsonian Institution fill the city with history and art from across the country, around the world, and even a little piece of the moon that you can touch if you know where to find it. Security continues to restrict access to the great government buildings, but the Capital, the White House and the Supreme Court still thrill visitors as home to world class power politics. |
National Air and Space Museum The title of most visited museum in the world goes to the National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC. Air and space is home to many historic firsts in flight including the original Wright Flyer (the first airplane to maintain self sustained controlled flight,) the Spirit if St Louis (the first airplane to be flown non-stop across the Atlantic,) the Voyager (the first airplane to fly non-stop and non-refueled around the world,) and the Apollo 11 command module (the part of the space craft that returned to the earth from the first manned moon landing.) While you are there take the opportunity to touch a piece of the moon, in a wood and glass display, just to the north of the Apollo 11 Command Module near the windows. |
National Gallery of Art The National Gallery of Art contains an incredible collection of art from around the world and from many eras. The East Building is a masterpiece of modern architecture and contains modern and contemporary art. The West Building is very classical and contains a vast array of sculpture and paintings from the renaissance to early 1900’s. |

christine.j Wed Jun 14, 2006 09:01 UTC It's good to know about the metro system and the left luggage facilities. By the way, your description of your Christmas in Paris is great. |
