| | Kingdoms prior to nation The histories of Laos, like most of Southeast Asia, include a number of kingdoms before the modern nation of Laos emerged. Pakse is the site of pre-Angkorian culture and seat of the Khun Lo royal line (most are now located in Europe). The Victorian Champasak palace is now a charming hotel with a wonderful view of the Mekong River. |
Temples prior to Angkor Wat Phou, a UNESCO heritage site, is a magnificent example of pre-Angkorian Champa-Hindu architecture in Laos. Many of its features presage the better-known Angkor Wat of Cambodia, including large reservoir-like barai and sacrificial stones. Current restoration and archeological research make it an interesting site to visit. | | | Floral offerings at Wat Phou |

| | Faces of the Mekong River The Mekong River changes its personality as it moves southward. Laos has some of the most beautiful parts of the river, including calmer stretches where rare fresh water dolphins can be found. |
