Arriving at Chiang Mai airport was a very pleasant experience, such helpful and friendly people. This continued to be our experience of the people of this region. Our accomodation was excellent. We stayed at the Lotus Hotel Pang Suan Kaew which was in Chiang Mai's largest shopping mall. Everything you could want practically on your doorstep. Exploring the city was great fun jumping into the tuk-tuk's or songtaews and very cheap. One very good place we discovered to eat was the Galare, a large open air eaterie near the Night Bazare where a lot of the local people eat and you get your tickets to the value of the meal you want and then go and choose your food. Very delicious! The night bazare is very good too with stalls and stalls of all sorts. We probably did all the usual touristy things such as a visit to an elephant sanctuary but the one we chose was very good as we were told it was government run and the animals were treated very well and the place and surroundings were lovely. The 1hour elephant ride was probably the highlight of our trip, quite something. Also we were lucky enough to be in the city at the same time the annual Chiang Mai Flower Festival was being held and this was really brilliant (if you like flowers) definitely worth seeing. The Museum of Chiang Mai a little drive out was very interesting and a nice cool place to visit out of the heat. The 6 days we had was not really long enough as so much more to see and do but gave us enough of a taster. We would love to go back again one day. |
