Bienvenue à Montréal

by RandomJunkie - last update: Mar 25, 2005

Montreal is a big and livefull village. It's heart is located on the south side of Mont-Royal, that is where you want to be (and most probably end up anyway). The common mistake of the common tourist is to stick around the Old Port (touristic area) and the western side of downtown (english/shopping/business area). Montreal is a heterogeneous city. Multilangual, multicultural, and one of the most liberal city in North America.

It's also a dirty city. There's a lot of cars, there's a lot of traffic. Only the business sector is not grafiti-covered. Sometimes you'll wonder, " Why is there as much dog s--- everywhere ? What is this, Paris ? " And let's not even talk about the winter, altough they are getting warmer...

Use the subway to get around, it's not a huge city anyway. Everything is close. Sainte-Catherine has some sex shops on top of burger kings. I think these shops have a totally different target, but there so much diversity on that street, who cares. Ste Catherines is a good street to keep in mind when you go to Montreal.

Gay Village, "Quartier Latin", Plateau Mont-Royal, Ste-Catherines, St Laurent, St-Denis, Crescent, Rene-Levesque, Sherbrooke, the Old port , the Mount Royal. Many universities, a young population (McGill, Concordia, Université-de-Montréal, UQAM). Everything pretty much evolves around all this.

Summer is a good time to come down to Montreal, after a long winter, locals go crazy.

Pros:"Arts, music, business, shopping, whatever fits you, you'll find it here."
Cons:"The weather is either humid, or windy. It's getting weirder every year."
In A Nutshell:"It has everything...and it's on an island."
