Exploring 'Fairy Chimneys'

Cappadocia is famous for its 'fairy chimneys' which were formed by the erosion of the soft tufa, which resulted from the hardening of volcanic ash from nearby volcanoes.

Ürgüp, where we stayed in the Urgup Evi Cave Hotel, was our base for the three days we spent in Cappadochia.

In spite of not arriving there from Istanbul until the early hours of the morning, we were soon up again to begin our exploration of Cappadocia. We visited the Goreme Open-Air Museum during the first day, and, on the subsequent two days, walked down valleys, climbed about inside the churches and dwellings created by excavating into the rock formations, visited Kaymakli Underground City, and got up early for a balloon flight.

From here we travelled by road to Kalkan stopping off at Sultanhani and Konya, and staying overnight at Egirdir.
