Dubrovnik, which is built on a peninsula, so that a large part of it is surrounded by the sea, is a magnificent city with its walls with their towers and battlements, its marbled traffic free pavements, its numerous alleyways and squares and its historic churches and other buildings. It is also a vibrant city with a programme of constant cultural, artistic and musical activities, and the thousands of tourists who visit it add to its colour without making it feel over crowded.
We first visited Dubrovnik in 1984 on a day excursion from Tucepi, a seaside resort on the Makarska Riviera about 3 hours drive to the north of it, and had always wanted to revisit it.
When we did revisit it in 2007, we arrived by boat from Mlini, only a short distance down the coast, where we were staying.
On arrival, we walked along the paved street from the harbour to the Pile Gate, and, after taking photos of the gate and its guards dressed in their local costumes climbed up on to the City Walls. We then spent the rest of the day wandering around the streets and alleyways, stopping for lunch at an outdoor pizza restaurant in one of them and visiting several of the churches, the Ethnographic Museum and the Rector's Palace.
