|  | Zanzibar was our first destination in our trip to Tanzania, and the whole of our stay in Zanzibar from arriving at at Dar es Salaam airport up to and including obtaining our bus tickets for our first journey on the mainland of Tanzania was excellently organised by Zanzibar Travel. Almost as soon as we stepped off the plane at Dar airport, we were met by somebody who assisted us to get our visas and our tickets for the ZanAir flight to Zanzibar, a short hop across the Indian Ocean. On arrival at Zanzibar airport, we were met by Seidi, who was to be our guide whilst we were on Zanzibar, and a driver. They took us to Shooting Star Lodge where we were to spend our first four nights. |
At the end of our stay there, they collected us and took us to Tembo House Hotel in Stone Town, where we were to spend a night, stopping en-route at a forest village for a spice tour. This consisted of a couple of hours walk through the forest with our guide and a young lad from the village, during which they found for us numerous different spices, some from plants on the ground, some from roots underground and some from up in the trees. The young lad climbed up to collect the latter for us. At the end, as well as being given an opportunity to buy spices, we were given hats, a bag and a necktie which the local people had made for us out of palm leaves!
