Theresa Hotel

The Theresa Hotel is a simple and cheap hotel in a superb position right on the north coast of the Karpas Peninsula. We stayed for a night following our hire-car overheating, and the owner, who spoke good English, assisted us in arranging for the replacement car to be brought to us.

When Peter asked the owner for the dinner menu, he showed him the barbecue on which it was to be cooked and then took him to a large freezer and showed him the huge selection of fresh fish from which we were able to choose!

We, subsequently, had dinner with him on the terrace overlooking the sea. It transpired that he originally came from Latchi, a small village on the Greek side of Cyprus, which we stayed in a few years ago. He had subsequently been a teacher In Istanbul, but had returned to Cyprus to run the hotel.

Although, there were several staff, the only other guests were another English couple who were staying at the hotel for a week, having read about it in the Guardian newspaper, and who seemed very happy with it.

Altinkaya Hotel

The Altinkaya Hotel is situated on both sides of the road from the centre of Girne to Bellapais Abbey, and is a popular place to stay.

We paid a small supplement for a room in the main hotel building but, when we arrived, apparently because of a booking error, were put into a 'bungalow' which was in need of some refurbishment and repair. However, the following morning, we were moved in to a hotel room, which turned out to be extremely comfortable. On the last day of our stay, we were given a voucher worth a few pounds to spend in the hotel restaurant and bar as compensation for the error!

We paid £2 extra each for half-board, which was good value and included a Cyprus evening with local dishes, live music and dancing.

Altinkaya Hotel (Swimming-Pool)

We spent quite a lot of time in the hotel's very pleasant swimming pool.
