Department stores: Harrod's...more than a department store!
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Name of Shop: Department stores

A store with quite a history. I am not sure I can afford some of the things they have for sale but it is worth the trip to go for a visit. I know some people who just go there just to get a shopping bag from there!...I did get a few "touristy" things as souvenirs for friends and family.

At the basement level of the staircase, the owner , Mohamed Al Fayed, installed a shrine to the memory of his son and Pricess Diana. It is decorated like an Egyptian Palace.

There is a full history of the building available on their website.

What To Buy: They have everything for sale...really...!...or so it seems. Even a jet!

Their store guide states: "Where else can you buy a bed with a built-in air conditionning, a 12,500 Pounds bottle of whisky, a Russian dwarf hamster and a Madame Tussaud's waxwork of yourself?"

Food and Drink: A quick bite which can prove to be really good!
  • Tip Rating: [Not enough ratings yet]
  • Name of Shop: Camden Market, all the food stalls

The Camden Market day is on Sundays but there are signs everywhere saying they are open all week long. You will find pretty much anything... from antique shops to Goth clothing shops and everything in between (hand made soap with dried mini roses, paintings, pictures, vintage clothing, computer art, Indian imports, Doc Marten boots, retro furniture, dishes from Jerusalem,...

They also have an array of prepared foods from different regions of the world. This time I saw a Bavarian booth offering German sausages, sauercrout and potatoes. Another one was offering Moroccan tagine. You will need to walk around to see all of the food areas as they are scattered around the market. The one problem I found is that due to the large volume of people, you might end up eating standing up or while walking around. This was not so popular with my inlaws and we finally found a spot at a pic-nic table. The prices are reasonnable and the variety interesting. This time I tried some couscous with lamb and it was very good. I found that in the summer there was a bit more selection for food.

If you are ready for a sea of colours and people it might just be a great place to go visit on a sunny day.

What To Buy: Great place to find souvenirs or little gifts to bring home for friends and family.

What To Pay: Some are open to bargaining...
